A 2011 statewide survey of North Carolina’s early care and education workforce was conducted by the Child Care Services Association from March to November 2011, collecting data from 631 center directors (15% of all programs) and 2,525 teaching staff members. The survey used stratified random sampling across 14 Child Care Resource and Referral regions with weighted data to enable generalization to an estimated 30,000 teaching staff across 4,211 centers, building on a 2003 survey to track changes in the ECE system, finding improvements in star-rated license levels, education levels, and turnover, but stagnation or losses in wages and certain benefits.
